What songs to put on a hard drive ? ? ?

Hi everybody,

I've recently bought a Denon HD 2500, check out my other post on it.

Anyway....I'm slowly making my transition over to playing MP3 with it, so first I have to rip my collection over to MP3 format.

I'm in the process of ripping right now and still have a way to go before I'm done, I hope I don't blow up my writer in the mean time !

So, as I'm loading my CDs into my computer, I'm looking at some of these songs and realizing, I haven't played some of these in YEARS if at ALL ! ! !

My question to all of you reading this is......

What tunes do you decide to rip ( meaning "usefull tunes" ), and how do you decide what tunes NOT to rip ( meaning "UNusefull tunes" ) ? ? ?

Thanks for any replies.

That's the tough thing about the whole process.

If you were to only rip the 2000 songs you'll ever use... you'd have to spend a lot of time figuring out which ones were on which CDs.
Probably easier and faster (assuming you have the HD space) to just rip them all.

Funny thing is, it's a LOT easier to figure out which song are in the top 2000 AFTER you've ripped them all, and used the system for a few dozen events.

Then it's a simple matter to compile the play logs.

Me? I ripped them all.

But I ripped them at different bitrates depending on how much I use the song. I.E. My most popular stuff I ripped in a lossless format, etc.

That begs the question, which get ripped lossless, and which at whatever of several bitrates, etc.

And you're back to the chicken/egg problem.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm looking at these old rap and hip hop compilation CDs, and I'm like..." I haven't gotten any requests for this since I stopped doing kids dances !"

I buddy at work put it this way, "Do you have that song with you when you do weddings now ? "

"Well....yeah."

"Then you might as well have it on your HD too."

O.K., it makes sense, but, it just seems like I'm giving up the weight of CD cases, but I'm not actually clearing out anything.

Any other replies on how to decide what you need / not need, are welcome.

See ya !

I switched over in about 2002. Hard drives were pricier then. But I found a 200G drive for under $200. Bought 2 of them. Set them up to mirror each other and recorded everything at 192 whatever. They're only about half full and I have about 15,000 songs on them. It was just easier to rip a whole disc than to set and selectively pick songs. Never saw the point of that.

Why worry about clearing out anything? If I could have a copy of every single song ever recorded, I would! It's not like the hard drives get heavier as you fill them up, right? Throw everything on there! :D

I have ALL my music ripped to two 200G external drives. I only keep the top 2000 on my laptop's drive. This is so if I have any issues with my laptop I can always run out a decktop CPU with my external drives and still have my complete music library OR if one or both of my external drives go down, I still got my top 2000 on my laptop to successfully complete my event.

Hi everybody,

O.K., I can't argue about the speed and ease of just ripping ALL my CDs.

I hope I don't burn out my drive first !

I'm going to post another topic, spun off this one. Watch for it, I think it'll be interesting.

See ya.
